Guinness Is Good For You

This was a day that a lot of people were looking forward to because we got to visit the Guinness brewery. Our day started with a short bus ride around the city including a quick stop at the memorial park built in honor of those who lost their lives in the Easter Rising of 1916. After that we toured the Kilmainham Gaol, a 19-century jail that played an important role in housing political prisoners who were involved in the Irish independence movement.

After learning more about the struggle for Irish independence, we made our way over to the Guinness brewery. The tour started with information about the ingredients that go into beer (come on, you know what they are...barley, yeast, hops, and water), and then the displays went into the sequence of processes that transform these ingredients into Guinness. After these displays, we arrived in the "Perfect Pint" area where we received a lesson in how to pour a pint of Guinness from the tap. Did you know that it takes 119 seconds to pour a pint of Guinness properly? We can all attest that there's something about pouring your own pint that makes it taste even better!

Tomorrow we have a free day in Dublin before we leave for Hungary on Wednesday (of course, all contingent on the ash). I know that a group of us plan to visit the Jameson Distillery, a few want to do some shopping, and a few have a day trip to the Wicklow Mountains. I'll try to provide a summary of everyone's day tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes.
